Monsters vs Aliens (2009)

August 4th, 2010 · No Comments

Great voice cast in this sweet film about “Monsters” that defeat the aliens and save the world. The 3D thing is a bit overdone and really irrelevant when watching it on a television. But none of the effects were bothersome.

Get Smart (2008)

July 31st, 2010 · No Comments

Not as bad as anticipated. Sort of fun. Some nice nods to the original show. The Duane Johnson character was quite fun. Over all an ok watch.

Lords of Dogtown (2005)

July 28th, 2010 · No Comments

Everytime I see a film with Heath Ledger in it, it makes me sad. He transformed himself in every role.

The story has been told before in documentary form, but this was a bit more dramatic a take as no one needed to rely on old 8mm footage, television interviews or faded memories. They could just make it what they wanted. Great cast of young actors, many who have been seen in plenty since.

And bravo to the make up artist for Rebecca DeMornay. It takes some real talent to make her look that bad.

The film follows the surf and skateboarding trends that originated in Venice, California during the 1970′s.

Public Enemies (2009)

July 26th, 2010 · No Comments

Johnny Depp looks great in this film. Since you know the ending, it is just a matter of how they interpret the story. Enjoyable enough.

The Invention of Lying (2009)

July 26th, 2010 · No Comments

Fun look at the world if no one except one guy was able to lie. Amusing. Takes a very cynical tone about religion, so if that offends you, I recommend you don’t watch this.

imdb.com

It’s a world where everyone tells the truth – and just about anything they’re thinking. Mark Bellison is a screenwriter, about to be fired. He’s short and chunky with a flat nose – a genetic pool that means he won’t get to first base with Anna, the woman he loves. At a bank, on the spur of the moment he blurts out a fib, with eye-popping results. Then, when his mother’s on her deathbed, frightened of the eternal void awaiting her, Mark invents fiction. The hospital staff overhear his description of Heaven, believe every word, and tell others. Soon Mark is a prophet, his first inventive screenplay makes him rich, and he’s basically a good guy. But will that be enough for Anna?

Silly buddy picture. Fun, goofy, worth a watch for mindless entertainment. They never explain the chicken. WHY don’t they explain the chicken?

Chicago Cab (1997)

July 23rd, 2010 · No Comments

One of those “happened one night” films in the vein of After Hours. Interesting, enjoyable, a little creepy. Great performance by Paul Dillon. Makes you want to read the book it is based on just to read about the other freaky things he came upon.

imdb.com

14 hours in the life of a Chicago cab driver is examined as he picks up fares from the good and bad parts of the city and emotionally connects to many of his passengers including a depressed rape victim whom he longs to help, but knows there is nothing he can do. Other fares include a drug runner and a manic race to get a pregnant woman to the hospital. Little is shown of the cabbie’s own life and thus the film leaves us with no emotional connection to his life.

Hope Springs (2003)

July 19th, 2010 · No Comments

Predictable and boring comedic romance about a guy that thinks he got dumped, runs away to America, crazy fiance’ follows him and he falls in love with a local girl. Oliver Platt is amusing as the mayor.

imdb.com

Colin Ware (played by Colin Firth) arrives in the most hopeful sounding town he can find to forget his old life. Hotel managers: Joanie Fisher (Mary Steenburgen) and Mr. Fisher (Frank Collison, also seen in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?) are worried about the despondent guest, and ask therapist, Mandy (played by Heather Graham) to come talk to him. Colin’s ex-fiance (and reason for his despondency), played by Minnie Driver arrives and tries unsuccessfully to get the hotel managers to tell her where he is staying.

Complications ensue when Driver convinces Graham that she is still part of Colin’s life. Colin must take drastic action, and enlists the help of the mayor, Doug Reed (Oliver Platt).
