Little Fish (2005)

December 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Cate Blanchett plays a recovering heroin addict surrounded by dysfunction in this character study. As she struggles to move on and start a business partnership the past slams into her right and left. She can’t get a loan because of her past addiction and the crimes associated with it. She can’t get her mother’s exboyfriend to stop shooting up and ends up scoring for him. Her brother is a meth dealer. And all she really wants is to be part owner of a video store. Doesn’t seem like much to ask. You really feel for her.

Hugo Weaving is an actor that has taken chances with almost every role. Here he plays a heroin addict that used to be a rugby champion in Australia. He has also played an “agent”, a cross dresser, an elf, and voiced many animated characters through the years. It has to be great as an actor to be able to play such a wide variety of characters. I am always interested in what he might do next. It looks like he will be in The Wolfman in 2009.

This film was sad and sometimes hard to watch as you knew things weren’t going to go well, but it is worth it. Moves slow sometimes, but great characters make up for it.
