Her Majesty (2001)

April 28th, 2009 · No Comments

We had been looking for a nice charming British film to follow “Saving Grace” from a couple nights ago. This was the closest we could find.

The film is about a young girl and her campaign to try and get Queen Elizabeth to come to her small town in New Zealand when she made her first trip there after her inauguration.

Charming, yes. But a bit preachy. Sometimes way too preachy. The film deals with the British occupation of Maori lands and the treatment of those people.

The scenery is beautiful. The relationship that grows between Elizabeth and the Maori woman is sweet at times. The townspeople are often portrayed as bigots and extremely mean spirited or sheep.

An eneven film with charm. I can’t recommend it, but I can’t tell you to avoid it.
