WALL·E (2008)

May 1st, 2009 · No Comments

This was a cute/sweet film. It did all the things that Pixar is known for – great graphics and characters you can care about that aren’t human.

It was unfortunately a bit heavy handed in the whole “Save the Earth” campaign. The anti-computer/tv message was a bit much too. And of course, you can’t forget the giant corporation that destroys the world. I felt manipulated, and not in the good way.

The love stories were nice. Both WallE and Eve and the couple that turned off the screen and discovered a world they didn’t realize existed.

When it comes down to it, when they weren’t with Wall-E, the film was a litany on what happens if you are lazy, wasteful, watch too much tv or play with your computer too much and don’t eat right. It isn’t what I was here for.  If people don’t realize they have choices to make in their daily life, this film will not change that. And if an animated film has to tell them they are wasting their lives and destroying the world, I will be sad for the rest of the day. I think Wall-E got that it was all about connections with someone else. For something that had spent the most time alone, he was quite well socially adjusted.

I worry that after this film, a lot of kids wanted pet cockroaches.
