I understand why this film won Oscars. Great story, great acting, well paced, visually interesting. I cared about these people. I didn’t want the ending I knew was coming to happen.
Penn was understated and really inspiring in this part. But then he is a really great actor.
And after vowing to never watch another Van Sant [...]

Far from Heaven (2002)

Visually stunning film that captured the look and feel of both the people, homes and film making look of the 1950’s.
Predictable plot about the ugly side of marriage, homosexuality, racism, and small town social circles in the 50’s.
So pretty to watch even if you have seen the film before under dozens of different names.
And, as [...]

I love this music. The birth of Chicago Blues and pretty much rock and roll looked at through the tiny Chess label and recording studio.
Great acting (I especially enjoyed Mos Def, but I always do), wonderful story, AMAZING soundtrack.
Based on a true story, but with obvious liberties.
And the guy that plays Howling Wolf is just [...]

Charming film about a down and out woman that falls into a social secretary position for a wanna be starlet.
McDormand and Adams work well together. They bring out the best in each other when in scenes together.
The story is predictable and somewhat too adorable, but enjoyable nonetheless. It is a fast 90 minutes with good [...]

This suspenseful, well done and very wet film was filled with “I recognize that guy” moments.
Matthew McConaghey stands out as a commander of a submarine that realizes the sacrifices that must be made in times of crisis. All the characters grow and were actually quite believable. This may be one of the best WWII films [...]

Francis Ford Coppola wrote and directed this long, beautiful film that made me feel like I was in film school again and I fear having to write 1000 words about this film. Why? Because I really didn’t get it. I got the message, but was it a dream? Did any of it happen? If it [...]

Vatel (2000)

This was a beautiful film about one long weekend in the country for King Louis XIV of France and the festivities and excesses surrounding him, his court, his staff, and the one man who organized it all – Vatel.
The sets were lavish, the countryside was beautiful, the palace was amazing, the clothes were lush. The [...]

I have not seen the documentary about the Ediths and am not sure if I want to after seeing this. It was depressing watching the relationship between this mother and daughter. The mother was possibly one of the most selfish women I had ever seen. The fact that she did not completely kill the spirit [...]
