Great voice cast in this sweet film about “Monsters” that defeat the aliens and save the world. The 3D thing is a bit overdone and really irrelevant when watching it on a television. But none of the effects were bothersome.

When a meteorite from outer space hits a young woman and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years.
This film started a week of seeing way too many pastie white man butts and Steve Coogan gave plenty.
When I heard this film was coming out and the premise, I was curious, but not enough to go to a theatre and plunk down 10 bucks. That was a good call. Though a basically enjoyable film, it was quite flawed. Too much angst with the wife and not enough time spent on the musical numbers.
Elizabeth Shue was quite funny in this film, the rest of it sort of glided along on basic premises of comedy including racial stereotypes and the little play that could.
An ok watch. Some fun musical numbers, no one was afraid of being silly, but not really one of the best of worse films I have seen lately. Just sort of there for the most part.

In this irreverent comedy, a failed actor-turned-worse-high-school-drama-teacher rallies his Tucson, AZ students as he conceives and stages politically incorrect musical sequel to Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
I was raised on the Dr. Suess books and used to love the illustrations. I appreciate that they kept that feel throughout Whoville, but sort of wish they had skipped their manic quest for realism in the jungle scenes. It is pretty enough, but it just didn’t feel Suess enough for me.
The story is one that almost every child is familiar with and there is nothing I can say about the story. It is appropriate for our time and a great story with wonderful characters. No disservice was done to the story.
So back to the animation style. I understand the reason for using a different style to a point for both worlds, but found the anime’ dream sequence of Horton’s to be way too off the path. It was almost as though it was shoved in there because anime’ is hot. I think it could have been skipped.
Beautiful film, fun voices, great story. Problems, but none that would keep me from recommending it and probably catching it again some day.

Horton the Elephant struggles to protect a microscopic community from his neighbors who refuse to believe it exists.
Sometimes you watch a film and you have no idea what to think. I mean, we’ve seen enough films to know a bad film, and this did not meet that criteria. We’ve seen some great films, this isn’t wandering in that pack. We’ve seen films that were just there and this was more than that.
Was it good, sure. Was it bad? Well it was too long, but it wasn’t bad.
Some films take more than one viewing to really appreciate and you get more out of it with each viewing. Of course, rarely am I going to watch a difficult film multiple times when the run time clocks in at 2 hours 25 minutes.
So there were some interesting stylized performances. There were some performances that were over the top – stylized or not. The body tattoo on The Rock was impressive. The scar on Justin Timberlakes face was gnarly. The zepplin in HD was really beautiful. The story was not as confusing as many people would have led me to believe, but I did feel I may have missed a couple things by not reading the prequel comic book first. It was never enough to keep me from the story but it may have been interesting.
So all in all I am not sure how I felt about this film. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, felt it was more than just ok, but don’t have the inclination to give it another watch. I guess I will wait for Richard Kelly’s third film to see how I feel about him as a director.

Don’t watch this film with easily amused friends. Glad you were here though, Deb.
