Another one of those Must See films that I just hadn’t seen from beginning to end.
A look at a NYC I didn’t know, since I didn’t get there until it had started to clean up. But I did recognize some of the areas.
Overall, glad I saw it. I found the soundtrack to be overwhelming and quite bothersome at points. I can’t quite figure out how Jodie Foster was nominated for an Oscar for that performance. She was barely in the film. Cybill Shepard had begun her soft focus contract by this film. DeNiro was ok, he wasn’t as menacing as I expected from all I knew about the film.

A mentally unstable Vietnam war veteran works as nighttime taxi driver in a city whose perceived decadence and sleaze feeds his urge to violently lash out, attempting to save a teenage prostitute in the process.
This suspenseful, well done and very wet film was filled with “I recognize that guy” moments.
Matthew McConaghey stands out as a commander of a submarine that realizes the sacrifices that must be made in times of crisis. All the characters grow and were actually quite believable. This may be one of the best WWII films I have seen. Mind you, I don’t see a lot of war films, but this one just seemed to keep me on the edge of my seat. I knew someone would probably survive, but who, how many and how?
A recommend.

I like Kate Winslet. Though the first time I recall seeing her was in Titanic, the work I have seen since then has impressed. I also came to a whole new respect for her after her guest appearance on “Extras”. If you haven’t seen it, you must.
So we put this film in our queue of movies to watch. We knew it was a drama, but with Winslet and Keitel, we didn’t think we could go wrong. Well, this is no happy go lucky film by any extent of the imagination. Both actors giving great performances. They both hit the highs and lows of their characters spot on. You love and hate, want them to go away and feel compassion for them.
Keitel is a cult exiter counselor. Basically he deprograms people that families have taken from cults. Winslet plays a woman that becomes involved with a guru on a vacation in India. Her family gets her back to Australia on the pretense that her father is dying. She then in convinced to see Keitel’s character. They spend 3 days in a cabin in a desolate part of Australia. It changes both their lives. They both manipulate, break down, come back for more and learn a lot about themselves.
Moving, grueling, could have been a bit shorter. An intense film. Sometimes there is a lot going on, sometimes very little, but you get a real feeling for these characters.
I wouldn’t watch this again, because of the intesity, but would recommend a single watch by anyone looking for a deep and heavy drama.
Be Kind.

This movie has been done about 4 million times before and a couple of them also starred Harvey Keitel. Cop destroys his personal relationships going after that one elusive bad guy.
The bad guy was played by Viggo Mortensen. He had cops on the payroll and when he was done with them, he blew them up. Let that be a lesson to bad guys playing good guys.
I like Keitel alot. It is probably the only reason I chose to watch this film. Harvey, you let me down. Nothing fantastic happened. The character was nothing more than a tool of the system dragging down everyone else until he met his singularly focused goal of catching THIS bad guy who we really weren’t told that much about prior to his landing in London. So we have no idea why you are really so obsessed. And you did nothing to make me care either.

The London police are having trouble with organized crime commited by juvenile delinquents. Their leader is an American who is an expert at turning young men into ruthless gangsters. American cop John Harris is asked to help the London police to break up the organization.
Part live action, part cg animation. Was hoping for more with a cast like it had. Not bad, not great. Freddie Highmore is a delight to watch in almost anything he is in and this is no different. The rest of the film just sort of drug a bit. Great dog.

Ten-year-old Arthur, in a bid to save his grandfather’s house from being demolished, goes looking for some much-fabled hidden treasure in the land of the Minimoys, a tiny people living in harmony with nature.
I was in the mood for a big Hollywood film and this fit the bill. We hadn’t seen the original film, but really don’t appear to have lost anything due to that.
Instead of lots of guns and explosions, this appears to have really had a water thing going in the big scene. Lots of water. Threat of drowning. The bad guy being selfless.
Unrealistic in almost every aspect and completely enjoyable.

Treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates looks to discover the truth behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, by uncovering the mystery within the 18 pages missing from assassin John Wilkes Booth’s diary.
I didn’t expect a movie about Auschwitz to be upbeat, but this was a very hard watch. Great acting, great story about the jews that worked for the Nazis in the camp trying to give themselves a few extra months to live and thier revolt that destroyed 2 of the incinerators. The sacrifices they made to save others or at least try to slow down the events. Odd casting with David Arquette playing one of the jews. Keitel played a fuhrer. If you are up for a great hard hitting film, I recommend this.

John Travolta is fun. The film is ok. Great cast.
