I understand why this film won Oscars. Great story, great acting, well paced, visually interesting. I cared about these people. I didn’t want the ending I knew was coming to happen.
Penn was understated and really inspiring in this part. But then he is a really great actor.
And after vowing to never watch another Van Sant film after Last Days, I am glad we gave this one a watch.

How can anyone resist a boy that plays “Melt With You” on the accordian? Well, I can’t.
A stereotypical teen high school comedy about how the A-list isn’t all one would hope for. The girls are conceited, shallow and have really gross toes. The guys main goal is conquest.
Of course, the geeks win in the end. And fall in love. Remember, your true friends will always be there.
Probably one of the more charming of these high school comedy films we can’t resist even far into adult hood. (Damn you John Hughes for getting me addicted to this genre).
And the frat boy in you will be amused by the 6 foot penis and the sadist of a PE Coach.

Best friends and neighbors, Ryan Woodman and Maggie Carter, are four weeks away from the prom, and they’ve agreed to go together if they don’t have real dates. Then Chris, a cool guy from the football team, offers to help Ryan connect with Ashley, a popular blond. In exchange, a la Cyrano, Chris needs Ryan’s help to get close to Maggie. Ryan makes the deal, helps the dastardly Chris play Maggie, takes advantage of Ashley’s lack of self-esteem, loses his values, makes fun of his geeky friends, and falls in Maggie’s estimation. I guess with a name like The Dead Girl there was no way this would be an upbeat movie. This is 5 great profiles of women with no self esteem at all and the connection of a dead girl. Great stories, but don’t be bummed out when you start watching this. I think this is one you have to be in the mood for.
