Happy ending, rich guy, everyone finding their true calling? Well, how the hell could that happen in a Hollywood film straight from the best seller shelves of Borders and the plot machine for chick flicks?
Girl finds love in buying things. Loses everything, gets unexpected job giving financial advice while being stalked by creditors, finds love and a green scarf.
It was what it was. A chick flick/Saturday Night/popcorn film.

I remember hearing all the critics rip on this film when it came out. It wasn’t enough like the cartoon, it wasn’t enough like the cartoon, etc.
Well, as a lover of color and appreciator of the my after school time being filled with Kimba and Speed Racer, I can say I enjoyed the film. The color was amazing. Super saturated. The story was actually a bit deeper than most speed racer afternoon cartoons. The only problem I had was the extreme close ups on some of the racing action. It was actually sort of hard to watch. A bit vertigo inducing.
I wish they had spent a bit more time in wideshots in the fight and race scenes. Seems like they spent a lot of time choreographing both and doing some great track cgi for the backgrounds and complex tracks. I would have like to have seen more of it.
So, great color, ok story, and John Goodman was looking much thinner than he has in a while. A nice watch, especially in HD. Not for everyone, it moves fast, but a fun enough watch.

The story begins with Speed Racer who is a young man with natural racing instincts whose goal is to win The Crucible, a cross-country car racing rally that took the life of his older brother, Rex Racer. Speed is loyal to the family business, run by his parents Pops and Mom. Pops designed Speed’s car, the Mach 5. The owner of Royalton Industries makes Speed a lucrative offer, Speed rejects the offer, angering the owner. Speed also uncovers a secret that top corporate interests, including Royalton, are fixing races and cheating to gain profit. With the offer to Speed denied, Royalton wants to ensure that Speed will not win races. Speed finds support from his parents and his girlfriend Trixie and enters The Crucible in a partnership with his one-time rival, Racer X, seeking to rescue his family’s business and the racing sport itself.
I can’t resist a Nicholas Cage film. He brings a certain somewhat predictable intensity to every performance. With this he takes burnt out on his job to a place I don’t think I have seen in any other film.
Bringing Out the Dead centers around an EMS medic in Manhattan who appears to be losing almost every patient he comes in contact with and they haunt him. I can only imagine how hard that job is. Though it might be easier at night (at least during the week, all bets are off on the weekends) since you don’t have as much traffic to deal with. But it appears the night calls might be a bit more grisly than the day calls. More shootings, more crazy. Ah, NYC nightlife.
The 2 hour length of this film went by quickly with a nice pacing of quiet times and extremely intense calls. You hope for Frank. You want him to get the girl, find a job he wants and live happily ever after. You know that it probably won’t happen, he just doesn’t have the personality for it, but you sort of want it to be quiet for him for a while.
A film that makes you care about everyone you meet, especially the over worked, burnt out, compassionate, drunk of a medic.
Favorite minor character: Nurse Constance who lists off what losers people are and asks why they should bother saving them.

Frank is a Manhattan medic, working graveyard in a two-man ambulance team. He’s burned out, exhausted, seeing ghosts, especially a young woman he failed to save six months’ before, and no longer able to save people: he brings in the dead. We follow him for three nights, each with a different partner: Larry, who thinks about dinner, Marcus, who looks to Jesus, and Tom, who wallops people when work is slow. Frank befriends the daughter of a heart victim he brings in; she’s Mary, an ex-junkie, angry at her father but now hoping he’ll live. Frank tries to get fired, tries to quit, and keeps coming back, to work and to Mary, in need of his own rebirth.
After last nights movie (Harsh Times) we were looking for something lighter where no one gets shot. For a comedy, this film had a pretty high non-funny body count. I think the best thing about this film was probably the wig they had on Michael Douglas. I wish the film had been more funny. I wish that we hadn’t had to sit through 3 minutes of Liv Tyler washing a car in some man’s fantasy. Everything in this film has been done before somewhere else, better.

Fun enough animated story about the importance of bees in every day life. We have the option of putting a couple bee boxes in our field this coming Spring. We may just do it. And according to this film, it will make my garden come to life almost instantaneously.

Better than I thought it would be. Predicatable.
