I understand why this film won Oscars. Great story, great acting, well paced, visually interesting. I cared about these people. I didn’t want the ending I knew was coming to happen.
Penn was understated and really inspiring in this part. But then he is a really great actor.
And after vowing to never watch another Van Sant film after Last Days, I am glad we gave this one a watch.

Too long. The characters were interesting enough, but it always amazes me in these films that are based on real events, how stupid people are. “I just watched my brother shoot someone in the head. I am SOOO going to work for him.” Really? The real events are based on the life of Frank Lucas, a drug dealer that attempted to make Harlem nothing but a neighborhood of junkies. I guess everyone needs a goal.

Let me start by saying that I LIKE the Coen Bros. They have brought us many films that I enjoyed immensely. I even enjoyed this film, but 4 Oscars? Best Motion Picture of the Year? Best Achievement in Directing? Was anything else nominated? There was nothing outstanding about this film. The characters weren’t all that interesting. The ending was non at best. This was just a nice film to watch.

I guess with a name like The Dead Girl there was no way this would be an upbeat movie. This is 5 great profiles of women with no self esteem at all and the connection of a dead girl. Great stories, but don’t be bummed out when you start watching this. I think this is one you have to be in the mood for.
