How did we miss this Eric Stoltz film? I thought I had kept up on them, but apparently not. And the fact that Mary-Louise Parker is in it, makes it even more odd that we didn’t see this the first time around.
So we pop this 15 year old film into the queue. It has actually held up much better than one would expect. Appropriately angsty with confused sexual situations/relationships and the never ending unsureness about your chosen career path.
And our friend Snoopy’s dad was in the writer scene on Martha’s Vineyard. So now I am a mere 3 steps away from Eric Stoltz, and I think that is a good thing.
So if you are up for a 15 year old film about angsty college graduate 20 somethings involved in the arts and theatre, this is your film.

Naked in New York begins in the car of grown up Jake, he is talking to us about his girlfriend, Joanne, (watch for the facial expressions) and to whom you can turn to for help while facing life (‘your parents, nyaa, I don’t think so’). From there it flashes back to his memories of his parents, college, house across from a squirrel infested peanut factory, best friend, writing career and Joanne.
You ever had that night where you wanted to watch a movie, but you didn’t actually want to have to think or concentrate? Well, this is the movie for you. Adorable dogs doing silly things.
And even if you don’t like silly movies, the chichuaha stampede in the desert is worth the cost of sitting through this terminally adorable film.

While on vacation in Mexico, Chloe, a ritzy Beverly Hills chihuahua, finds herself lost and in need of assistance in order to get back home.
I had high hopes for this film. Jason Statham is one of my very favorite Action guys. Jet Li kicks ass. I figured the two of them in a film would be cinematic perfection, at least from a great action movie perspective.
The film moved a bit slow, did not have nearly as much action as it needed to or should have had and Jason Statham did not take his shirt off even once. Aoki’s skills were wasted and Guzman needed more screen time.
Was the movie good, sure. Could it have been better, hell yeah!
The twist ending was interesting enough but slightly telegraphed.
These two men should be in films with more explosions, gun fighting and martial arts. I would watch a film they do together again, but I would hope for more. Angsty dialogue does not really have a place in a film with these two men. All we needed to know was told through some flash backs and a couple scenes in the police station.

When you bring in a character that seems so extremely secondary that one would wonder why he was even bothered with, he might as well have ‘killer’ tattoed on this forehead.
But despite that, this was a good film. Fun to watch things evolve. Some great clues were given to finding the victims. I only wish Queen Latifah’s part had been much larger.
And the NYC map was actually accurate unlike many films set in the city. The traffic on the FDR was a bit light though.

Denzel Washington plays a quadriplegic homicide detective. He and his female partner track down a serial killer.
Pacino as a Puerto Rican. Come on, the guys in the film even mention that he looks like an Italian. Not as interesting a guy as one would hope. Just a dirt bag trying to stay out of prison. Sean Penn had a great wig on. Penn was probably the most complex of the characters in this film. He wanted to be a lawyer, but still wanted the ‘exciting’ life his clients led. Leguizamo played a complete dirt bag, but the costumer must have had a great time finding all of those excessively tacky tiny little suits. An ok film, but way too long. And of course, De Palma starts near the end and then tells the story of how Carlito got there. I believe he uses that tired technique in every film he does.

You never know how funny or not funny something listed as a comedy with Denis Leary in it will be. I personally would have liked to have seen more of the writers in the apartment next door.
