Great voice cast in this sweet film about “Monsters” that defeat the aliens and save the world. The 3D thing is a bit overdone and really irrelevant when watching it on a television. But none of the effects were bothersome.
When a meteorite from outer space hits a young woman and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years.
Based on all I had heard, I figured this would suck, but at least I wouldn’t have to think about some big plot. Amazingly, this film didn’t suck. It was not cinematic tour de force or anything, but it was just a nice film about growing up and following your dream whether you are 17 or 35.
There were some parts that I would have preferred to not see, but this was the week of the pasty white man butt, so I guess that was inevitable.
So, not a great film, not a bad film. The music was unoffensive. The old band played by Will Arnett, Fred Armisen, and Bradley Cooper were quite amusing. The references to other rock legends and films were fun to see. I would watch this again if bored and looking for something light.
The Rocker tells the story of a failed drummer who is given a second chance at fame. Robert “Fish” Fishman is the extremely dedicated and astoundingly passionate drummer for the eighties hair band Vesuvius, who is living the rock n’ roll dream until he is unceremoniously kicked out of the band. Twenty years after his rock star fantasies are destroyed, just when Fish has finally given up all hope, he hears that his nephew’s high school rock band A.D.D. is looking for a new drummer. They reluctantly make him the newest member of the band, giving him a chance to reclaim the rock God throne he’s always thought he deserved, and taking the young band along for the ride of their lives.
I was raised on the Dr. Suess books and used to love the illustrations. I appreciate that they kept that feel throughout Whoville, but sort of wish they had skipped their manic quest for realism in the jungle scenes. It is pretty enough, but it just didn’t feel Suess enough for me.
The story is one that almost every child is familiar with and there is nothing I can say about the story. It is appropriate for our time and a great story with wonderful characters. No disservice was done to the story.
So back to the animation style. I understand the reason for using a different style to a point for both worlds, but found the anime’ dream sequence of Horton’s to be way too off the path. It was almost as though it was shoved in there because anime’ is hot. I think it could have been skipped.
Beautiful film, fun voices, great story. Problems, but none that would keep me from recommending it and probably catching it again some day.

I was trying to find something positive to say about this film because sometimes I worry that my reviews are too cynical or mean, but the only thing I could come up with is André Benjamin is a cutey.
This film felt far more sophmoric than any Will Ferrell film we had watched before. Too many scenes like the poker scene where grown men just sit around a table saying “bad words” and shooting a gun.
Almost everyone in this film was better than this film. Woody Harrelson was possibly the only good performance.
Disappointing. I expect more from this group and hope I get it next time.
It was nice to see they did use actual footage from Flint, MI. Nice to see them getting a couple of dollars from the entertainment world since the auto industry has left them so high and dry.

Another in a long line of men who act like teenagers, parents that allow them to never grow up and the hot girls that realize they love them series.
This film was never bad enough to stop watching, but never good enough to make me feel anyone deserved cash to make this. It ran the same line that many Lonely Island /Saturday Night Live skits/episodes run. You see something funny enough to keep tuned in, followed by something that makes you want to stop watching, but as soon as that ends it goes to something either visually or conceptually great.
And that is this entire film. Something ok, followed by something stupid, followed by something really fun or great.
And guys, no matter how many films you write, the geek living in his mom’s basement isn’t going to get the hot smart girl next door unless he is really really rich. She isn’t necessarily a gold digger, but come on. She can’t give up social status and live in your mom’s basement with you.
